Description

Nos 12, 14, and 15 Wellington Square in Ayr are early 19th century classical houses that form part of a mirrored pair within a terrace. These two-storey buildings, which also have an attic and basement, are constructed of painted ashlar. The basement features banded rustication, and there are band courses at the ground floor, an eaves course, a cornice, and a blocking course. The windows are architraved, with square brackets at the lower cill corners of the ground floor windows and cornices above the ground floor openings.

On the south (entrance) elevation, there are central stepped platts that oversail the basements, leading to double entrances with timber and glazed timber doors at the centre of each pair. The penultimate bay to the left is a window. Above the doors is decorative looped work, with flanking single windows. The first floor has regular fenestration, featuring two canted dormers at the centre and a single dormer to the outer right in the attic. The basement contains four single windows in the centre and two single windows in the outer bays, along with glazed timber doors at the re-entrant angles, while the bay to the outer left has boarded timber. The windows are predominantly plate glass timber sash and case, with four-pane windows in the attic dormers on the outer left and right, and twelve-pane windows in the basement on the outer left. The roof is covered with grey slate, featuring coped stacks and circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1998. The property is also complemented by railings and gates, which consist of ashlar copes topped with spear-headed iron railings, with urn finials marking the sections. There are two gates at the central bays and single gates at the outer left and right.
