18 Cathcart Street, Ayr

18 Cathcart Street in Ayr is an earlier 19th-century pair of houses that form part of a terrace. The building is two stories high, with a basement and an attic. The right side features sandstone rubble, which is painted at the basement level, while the left side has painted render. There is a painted band course at the ground floor, a cornice, and a blocking course, with painted margins around the window openings.

The northeast elevation, which faces the entrance, has a central stepped platt that oversails the basement and leads to two entrances. The entrance on the left is a lower plain margined door, while the one on the right features a columned, corniced, block-pedimented doorpiece. Both entrances have timber doors and painted letterbox fanlights. Above these, there are two single windows aligned at the first floor. The outer bays have single windows at both the ground and first floors. The basement of No 16 has a timber central door with flanking single windows, and No 18 has a timber door with a single window to the right. The attic features three single dormers, with segmentally arched dormers on the outer left and right.

The basement windows of No 16 have textured glass, while there is a modern enlarged window at the ground floor. The first floor has timber sash and case windows with six-pane upper sashes. No 18 has a shop window at the basement and plate glass at the ground and first floors. The outer dormers at the attic have 16-pane windows, while the central dormer has modern glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate and has coped brick stacks, including a low central wallhead stack with circular cans.
