Description
Monkwood Bridge is a single-span, round-arched bridge built in 1798 by John and James Rutherford, who acted as builders. It crosses the River Doon. The bridge is constructed from tooled sandstone rubble, with an unusual vermiculated arch-ring. It features a coped parapet. A tooled panel above the sculpted keystone in the centre of the eastern parapet reads "John and James Rutherford builders," while a panel on the western parapet displays the date "1798". The bridge is shown on Thomson's map of Ayrshire from 1828 and on both the 1860 and 1897 Ordnance Survey maps. It was noted on page 136 of K Andrew’s 1981 publication, Ayrshire: Kyle and Carrick District.
