Description

Anderson and Co, located at 60-62 Commercial Street in Lerwick, is a retail warehouse built around 1900. It is a two-storey building with a concealed basement and features a square plan on a sloping site. The walls are made of stugged squared and snecked sandstone, with droved edges. There is a base course and a band course at the first floor.

The south elevation facing Commercial Street is near-symmetrical, with a principal floor that has a curved corner to the left. It includes segmental-arched windows with projecting sills, an additional matching window between the bays to the left of center, and a six-panel, two-leaf timber entrance door to the right. The first floor has regular fenestration.

The west elevation, facing Market Cross, is also near-symmetrical, featuring an infilled basement window in the outer left bay and regular fenestration on both the principal and first floors.

The north elevation, which overlooks the harbour, maintains a near-symmetrical appearance with two vertically-boarded timber doors in the center and right bays at the basement level, and a fixed-light window with iron bars in the left bay. A smaller window has been inserted at the principal floor between the center and outer right bays, with regular fenestration at the first floor.

The shop windows on Commercial Street have plate glass fixed-lights, while the principal windows at the rear feature four-pane casements. Other openings have four-pane timber sash and case windows. The building is topped with a grey slate pyramidal roof, equipped with cast-iron gutters and downpipes. Stugged ashlar stacks and shouldered wallhead stacks flank the center bay of the west elevation, and there is a multi-flue stack on the east elevation, all topped with corniced circular cans.
