Description
These are a group of later 19th century cottages, forming part of the Bonjedward House estate. The group comprises three pairs of single-storey and attic, two-bay semi-detached cottages. They are constructed of dressed rubble sandstone with cream ashlar dressings, featuring stop-chamfered arrises, overhanging eaves with exposed rafters, and bipartite front windows. Single windows are present in the gableheads, with entrances located centrally. Pitched-roofed links connect the cottages, providing access to the rear. The rear elevations are of rubble construction, featuring bipartite box-dormers.
An L-shaped eastern block is present, featuring a bipartite window in the gable at ground level. A further three-bay cottage is attached to the north, facing the main road. A gabled timber porch is situated at the centre, with a panelled door and flanking windows. A dry-dashed single-storey addition extends to the rear. A single-storey addition is attached to the western block’s gable.
The windows are 12-lying-pane timber sash and case windows, with four-pane upper sashes, and a variety of glazing patterns to the rear. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and the building has coped ashlar stacks. These cottages represent a good example of estate housing, comparable to the village of Nisbet to the northeast. The statutory address covers numbers 1 to 7 inclusive.
