Description

This is a late 18th to early 19th century cross-plan building, originally built as a waulk mill on a sloping site with a water lade to the east. It was later rebuilt as a grain mill around 1870. The structure is primarily built of harl-pointed rubble sandstone with stugged ashlar dressings.

The west elevation features a projecting central range, which was formerly a kiln, with flanking ranges containing a door at ground level and a window above. A modern grain silo is located in the re-entrant angle to the north. The north elevation also has a projecting central range and flanking ranges with windows to the upper floor. A range to the east contains the wheel house, with an arched culvert over the lade. The east elevation displays a projecting wheelhouse range with a ground floor door, a range to the north with an upper-floor window, and a blank range to the south with a projecting, single-storey bay and cat-slide roof in the re-entrant angle. The south elevation has a projecting gabled central range, which incorporates a modern tractor opening. Evidence suggests a former kiln was located in this gable. To the right is a window in a bay with a cat-slide roof and a taller range behind. To the left is a range with a sliding barn door at ground level and a loading door above.

The windows are timber, multi-pane, often with louvres or boarded shutters below. The roofs are piended and covered in grey slates, with iron rooflights.

Inside, the building is now used as a store, but the original cast-iron water wheel with timber float boards and associated gearing survives. The mill appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1859 in much of its present form.
