Description
These are three pairs of semi-detached, single-storey and attic cottages, built in the later 19th century. They form part of the Bonjedward House estate and are a good example of Lothian estate housing, comparable with the village of Nisbet to the northeast. The cottages are constructed of dressed rubble sandstone with cream ashlar dressings, featuring stop-chamfered arrises, overhanging eaves with exposed rafters, and bipartite (two-part) windows to the front. Single windows are located in the gableheads. Centrally positioned doors provide entry. Single-storey, pitched-roofed links connect the cottages, each including a back door.
The rear elevations are of rubble construction, with bipartite box-dormers projecting from the roof. An L-shaped block extends to the east, featuring a bipartite window in the gable at ground level. A further three-bay cottage is attached to the north, facing the main road. A gabled timber porch is centrally located, incorporating a panelled door and flanking windows. A dry-dashed single-storey addition extends from the rear. To the west, a single-storey addition is attached to the gable.
The windows are timber sash and case, with 12 panes to the lower sashes and 4 panes to the upper sashes; the rear windows have a variety of glazing patterns. Grey slates cover the roofs, and coped ashlar stacks are present. The statutory address includes numbers 1 to 7 inclusive.
