5 Bonjedward Cottages, Bonjedward House

These are a group of later 19th-century cottages, forming part of Bonjedward House. The property comprises three pairs of semi-detached, single-storey and attic, two-bay cottages. They are built of dressed rubble sandstone with cream ashlar dressings, featuring stop-chamfered arrises and overhanging eaves with exposed rafters. The front windows are bipartite (divided into two lights), with single windows in the gableheads. Doors are situated in the centre of each pair. Low-pitched roofed links with back doors connect the cottages.

The rear elevations are of rubble construction and feature bipartite box dormers. An L-shaped block extends eastward, with a bipartite window to the gable at ground level and an attached three-bay cottage to the north, facing the main road. A gabled timber porch with a panelled door and flanking windows is centrally located. A dry-dashed single-storey addition extends to the rear. A single-storey addition is attached to the gable of the western block.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 12 panes to the lower sashes and four panes to the upper sashes, although there is a variety of glazing to the rear. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks. These cottages represent a good example of estate housing found in Lothian, similar to the village of Nisbet to the northeast.
