Description
The cottages at 2 Bonjedward Cottages, Bonjedward House, date from the later 19th century. They consist of three pairs of semi-detached, single-storey and attic cottages, each with two bays. The cottages are constructed from dressed rubble sandstone with cream ashlar dressings, exhibiting stop-chamfered arrises. The eaves overhang, with exposed rafters. Each cottage has a bipartite window on the front elevation, and a single window within the gablehead. Doors are centrally located. Single-storey, pitched-roofed links connect the cottages, incorporating back doors.
The rear elevations are of rubble construction, featuring bipartite box-dormers. An L-shaped block extends to the east, with a bipartite window in the gable at ground level, and a further three-bay cottage attached to the north, facing the main road. A gabled timber porch is centrally positioned, with a panelled door flanked by windows. A dry-dashed single-storey addition extends from the rear. A single-storey addition is also present on the west block, attached to the gable.
The windows are timber sash and case, with 12 panes in the lower sashes and 4 panes in the upper sashes; the rear windows have varied glazing patterns. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks. This is a good example of estate housing typical of Lothian, comparable to the village of Nisbet to the northeast. The statutory address is 1-7 Bonjedward Cottages, inclusive numbers.
