Description
1 Bonjedward Cottages, initially comprising three pairs of semi-detached, single-storey and attic, two-bay cottages, dates from the later 19th century. The cottages were constructed of dressed rubble sandstone with cream ashlar dressings, featuring stop-chamfered arrises, overhanging eaves with exposed rafters, and bipartite front windows with single windows to the gableheads. Centrally located doors are present on the front facade. Single-storey, pitched-roofed links connect the cottages, providing access with back doors.
The rear elevations are of rubble construction, with bipartite box-dormers. An L-shaped eastern block contains a bipartite window in the gable at ground level, and a further three-bay cottage is attached to the north, facing the main road. A gabled timber porch is centrally located, featuring a panelled door and flanking windows. A dry-dashed single-storey addition extends from the rear. A single-storey addition is also present at the gable of the western block.
The windows are timber sash and case, with 12 panes per window, and 4-pane upper sashes; varying glazing patterns are used at the rear. The roof is covered in grey slates, and coped ashlar stacks are present. These cottages represent a good example of Lothian estate housing, comparable in style to the village of Nisbet to the northeast. The statutory address includes numbers 1 to 7 inclusive.
