7 Bonjedward Cottages, Bonjedward House

These are three pairs of later 19th-century semi-detached cottages, forming 7 Bonjedward Cottages, and part of the larger Bonjedward House estate. The cottages are single storey with attics, and two bays wide. They are constructed of dressed rubble sandstone with cream ashlar dressings, featuring stop-chamfered arrises. The eaves overhang, with exposed rafters visible. The front windows are bipartite (two-paned), and there are single windows in the gableheads. Doors are located in the centre of each pair. Low-pitched, gabled roofs connect the cottages at the rear, with back doors providing access.

The rear elevations are of rubble construction and feature bipartite box-dormers. An L-shaped block extends to the east, with a bipartite window in the gable at ground level, and a further three-bay cottage attached to the north, facing the main road. A gabled timber porch, with a panelled door and flanking windows, is located centrally. A dry-dashed single storey addition is present to the rear. To the west, a single storey addition extends from the gable.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 12 panes in the lower sashes and 4 in the upper sashes; the rear windows have a variety of glazing patterns. The roofs are covered in grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks. These cottages represent a good example of estate housing typical of the Lothian area, comparable to the village of Nisbet to the northeast. The statutory address covers numbers 1 to 7 inclusive.
