4 Bonjedward Cottages, Bonjedward House

These are a group of later 19th-century cottages, forming part of Bonjedward House. The complex consists of three pairs of single-storey and attic, two-bay semi-detached cottages, positioned alongside an L-shaped east block and a west block. The cottages are built with dressed rubble sandstone, featuring cream ashlar dressings and stop-chamfered arrises. The eaves overhang, displaying exposed rafters. The front of the cottages features bipartite windows, with single windows in the gableheads. Centrally located doors provide access to the main cottages. Low-pitched, gabled links connect the cottages, incorporating back doors.

The rear elevations are of rubble construction, with bipartite box-dormers projecting from the roof. The east block features a bipartite window in its gable at ground level, with a further three-bay cottage attached to the north, facing the main road. A gabled timber porch, incorporating a panelled door and flanking windows, is centrally positioned. A dry-dashed single-storey addition extends from the rear of the east block. A single-storey addition has also been built onto the west block's gable.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 12 panes per sash, and 4 panes in the upper sashes. A variety of glazing patterns are found on the rear windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and coped ashlar stacks are present. These cottages are a good example of estate housing typical of the Lothian region, and are comparable to the village of Nisbet to the northeast.
