Description

The Old Smiddy, at Bonjedward House, is a building dating from the early 19th century and the earlier to mid-19th century, with later additions and alterations, and likely incorporating earlier fabric. It originally comprised two adjoining three-bay cottages, and was later used as a shop and house. The exterior is of whitewashed rubble with sandstone dressings laid in a long and short droved pattern.

The southern cottage’s west elevation features a gabled timber porch with glazing at the centre, flanked by paired windows. There are also two pitched, glazed dormers in the roof. A window is set into the gable end facing south. The rear of this section has single-storey additions constructed of rubble and weatherboarding, along with a gabled dormer.

The northern, earlier cottage has a west elevation with a door centrally positioned, flanked by windows under the eaves and rooflights. A later gabled addition has been placed at the rear, with a gable facing north, featuring a door flanked by windows and a window on its western return. A piend-roofed addition projects from the rear.

The building has timber sash and case windows: four-pane windows are found in the bays to the south, while the northern side has twelve-pane windows. The roof is covered in grey slates, with ashlar coped skews and ashlar apex stacks. The porch is characteristic of Lothian estate architecture, displaying similarities to the nearby Bonjedward cottages (which are listed separately). A K6 telephone kiosk located on the roadside is part of the overall setting and is listed separately.
