Description

New Mill Farm includes an early 19th century corn and barley mill with significant later additions and alterations, along with a ruinous farmstead attached to the east. The mill is a three-storey T-plan structure built from red sandstone rubble.

On the south elevation, there is a three-storey, three-bay range on the left, with the bays grouped towards the center. The ground floor features a central door flanked by windows, with additional windows above. Square louvred openings are located under the eaves on the second floor, and there is an arched culvert for the lade to pass underneath on the left. To the right is a two-storey single bay kiln range with a square opening on the upper storey, adjoining the wall of the farmstead at ground level.

The west elevation has an advanced three-storey gabled bay on the right, with a single window on each floor at the center. To the left is a largely blank three-storey warehouse range, where the former position of a lean-to wheel-house, which covered the lade, is evident. There is also a single-storey shed to the outer left.

On the north elevation, there is a two-storey bay on the left (the kiln) with an opening on the first floor, and the farmstead is attached to the east. To the right is a single bay of the three-storey range featuring a cart opening at ground level, with a window and ventilator on the upper floors. A projecting gabled warehouse range is located to the right, with an additional bay of the mill beyond.

The east elevation shows the two-storey gable end of the mill on the left, with a scar from the farmstead gable at ground level and a square opening above. Set back to the right is a largely blank three-storey warehouse range, which has three doors at ground level and a large warehouse door to the left on the first floor. There is also a single-storey three-bay cart shed on the outer right.

The building is covered with grey slates.

Inside, the timber floors remain intact throughout, although they are fragile. Much of the original machinery is still present, including baggers and millstones, although some gearing is missing. The farmstead attached to the east of the mill is completely ruinous and features a small courtyard.
