Description

The Southern Stable Cottage at Bonjedward House dates from the early 19th century, with subsequent additions and alterations, and possibly incorporating fabric from an earlier date.

The stable is a single-storey, five-bay rubble structure. Three bays were originally stables, featuring single windows flanking a doorway and a roof ventilator. A further door and window are located to the right, with an attached stack. It has a piended roof covered in grey slates. A later garage bay was added to the rear, with a cat-slide roof.

The garage is a single-storey rubble building, altered from an earlier form. It features a pair of boarded two-leaf garage doors. It has a gabled roof with pyramidal skewputts to the north, covered in grey slates. The north gable includes a blocked archway and a blocked pointed arch in the gablehead, which may have formerly housed a dovecot. Open implement sheds are adjoined to the south, with a corrugated-iron roof.

The cottages are a single-storey, L-shaped rubble structure, with the north range harled. The north range comprises three bays with a door to the left. The rear of the north range has two large windows to the right and two small windows to the left, with a further door in the end elevation. The south range has six irregular bays, arranged as a door, a louvred opening, a door, a window, a window, and a door from left to right. The rear elevation of the south range has five windows and a door to the inner right. Both ranges have piended roofs covered in grey slates, and brick stacks.

To the west stands a broad, low barn with a piended roof covered in grey slates. An entrance to the hay loft is provided from an embankment to the rear.

The complex forms a group value with Bonjedward House, the walled garden and the lodge, which are separately listed.
