Description

Leithen Bank is an early 19th century, two-storey, three-bay traditional house with a T-plan layout, located between the Leithen Water and a mill lade. The principal elevation features roughly coursed whinstone rubble with painted sandstone ashlar dressings, while the sides and rear are finished in painted render. The building has raised painted long and short quoins, and the windows and doors have tabbed margins. There are small square gable windows in the attic and a tall four-pane window in the later upper storey of the rear gable. A small single-storey piended extension is attached to the south gable, and the rear wing has glazed double doors.

The windows predominantly feature 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case styles, with the exception of the taller four-pane window in the rear gable. The entrance is marked by a broad six-panel timber door with a fanlight and fine brass door furniture. The roof is covered in grey slate with zinc ridges and has rendered gable end stacks, along with cast-iron rooflights and rainwater goods.

Inside, the house retains good early 19th century decorative detailing, including low and wide six-panel timber doors, panelled shutters, and plain cornicing. The main dogleg stair has a plain timber balustrade, with a later angled timber stair leading to a back room and evidence of a blocked stair window. The ground floor section at the rear has been modernised, but a small cupboard reveals remnants of the original cobbled floor. There is a door leading to a narrow turned timber stair that accesses the attic rooms, which feature a plain fireplace, box beds, and a servant's bell.
