Description

This building, located at 8-9 Links Place in Edinburgh, is an early 19th-century school that was significantly altered and extended for the Leith School Board in 1875. It features a two-storey and attic structure with three bays, along with later side wings and additions. The main house is constructed of cream sandstone with a stugged ashlar front, while the sides are made of rubble, and the side wings are built from coursed and squared rubble. The design includes a base course, chamfered reveals, and an eaves cornice.

On the southwest (front) elevation, there is a former doorway that has been converted into a window, framed by an architraved and pilastered surround at the center. The outer bays and the first floor display regular fenestration. The roof features three dormers, two of which are canted with piended roofs. To the outer left, there is a two-storey, two-bay recessed wing with a narrow pend to the left, and windows to the right and above. A small single-storey addition is located in the re-entrant angle, with a doorway on the return. To the outer right, there is a single-storey recessed wing that has a corniced bipartite window at the center, flanked by single-storey additions. An inscription dated 1875 is visible at the eaves level.

The northeast (rear) elevation has been rendered and is much altered. The building features four-pane timber sash and case windows and has a slate roof with two tall gablehead stacks. The interior was not seen in 1993.
