Description

Kirklands Farmhouse, dated 1831 with later alterations, is a single storey and attic, 3-bay, L-plan farmhouse featuring crow-stepped gables and a pediment. The main (east) elevation is constructed of squared whinstone, accented by prominent raised sandstone quoins and droved tabbed window margins. The north gable and the L-plan wing at the rear are finished in painted render. There is an eaves band course with a hidden gutter, a central crow-stepped pediment with a window, hoodmoulds over the doorway and bi-partite windows, and crow-stepped gables. The farmhouse has earlier 20th century flat-roofed leaded box dormers with slated cheeks and a weathervane. Additionally, there are later 19th century lean-to sections with 20th century openings at the rear.

The main elevation features 8-pane timber sash and case windows, while the side dormers have 12-pane windows and 6-pane side-hung casements. The entrance door is a 4-panel timber door with glazed upper panels and a delicate fanlight. The roofs are covered in grey slate, and there are corniced ashlar stacks with plain clay cans.

Inside, the farmhouse boasts fine decorative details, including 20th century Adam-style timber and gesso mantelpieces with marble inserts in the principal rooms. There are 6-panel doors and panelled timber shutters, as well as timber boarded doors in the rear section. A delicate curved stair with cast-iron banisters and a timber handrail adds to the interior's charm.

The boundary walls consist of sandstone-coped rubble walls at the front, with pyramidal capped piers at the pedestrian gateway. The sides are enclosed by rubble walls that surround a large garden to the south. A stone slab bridge crosses the mill lade in the garden.
