Description

West Cottage is a mid-19th century, symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay house located at Allerley Brae, Oxnam Road, Jedburgh. It features a mutual gable to the east and a later M-roofed addition at the rear. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings.

On the northeast elevation, the house has three bays, with a central corniced ashlar doorcase flanked by corniced canted windows that have a blocking course above. There are windows in all bays on the first floor.

The west elevation has four bays, with two bays on the left featuring a gable and apex stack. This side includes windows on both floors of the outer left bay and a small window in the gable, while the inner left bay is blank. The inner right bay has windows on both floors, and the outer right bay has a window at ground level.

The south elevation is five bays wide. It has a four-bay harled addition on the left, which is M-roofed with gablehead stacks. The left bays are blank, while the right bays have irregularly disposed windows, indicating significant alterations. The rightmost bay has single windows.

The windows throughout the house are 4-pane timber sash and case, with plate glass in the canted bays. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are ashlar skews and coped harled stacks. The interior was not seen in 1992.
