Description
The drinking fountain at Allerley Well Park in Jedburgh was built in 1891 and features a Gothic entrance and boundary wall for the public park located west of Newcastle Road and south of the town center.
The structure includes four red ashlar gatepiers topped with stone gablet caps, with engaged nook shafts at the corners and shield tablets set in sunken foiled panels below the gablets. A base course supports the gatepiers, and a coped wall runs between the central pier and the drinking fountain, which is situated at the center. Above the fountain is a polished pink granite panel inscribed with "ALLERLEY WELL PARK." The gatepiers display lead shields that provide information about the fountain's opening and its benefactor. Steps are positioned between the inner and outer piers, with the outer piers extending to the rear to form side walls. Each side wall features a return wall leading to the final central flight of steps, which is bordered by iron railings.
The boundary walls are low and curve gently in a southern quadrant along the edge of the road. They are constructed of coursed bull-faced sandstone with ashlar saddleback coping, interrupted at intervals by square piers on bases that are chamfered to octagonal caps. The sections of the wall immediately flanking the fountain are made of red sandstone, while the remaining sections are cream-colored. The wall ends to the south feature an ashlar plaque marking the site of the Blaikup Stone and a low round tapering pier with an ashlar cap. To the north, the wall adjoins the Old Parish Church and Manse.
