44, 45 The Square, Kelso

44 and 45 The Square in Kelso is a building dating from around 1830. It is a symmetrical block with six bays, three storeys, and an attic, constructed from painted polished ashlar. The ground floor originally featured a Tuscan pilastrade and contained shops. The shop front at numbers 42-43 still survives, while numbers 44-45 have a modern shop front and door on the west side, and number 46 has a late 19th century shop front. The first-floor windows are adorned with corniced architraves, although the cornices have been removed at numbers 42 and 43. There is a cill-course at the second floor, along with a mutuled cornice and blocking course. The roof is a slated piended platform, sloping to the east and west, with straight skews and brick stacks, and original segmental-headed dormers in the attic.
