Description
47 and 49 The Square in Kelso is an earlier 19th century building that stands three storeys high with an attic and features four bays. The original shops on the ground floor have had their central door blocked and replaced with windows. The building has channelled quoins at the corners and droved ashlar at the ground floor. The upper floors are roughcast, with an ashlar band-course between the first and second floors and a moulded eaves-course. The roof is a bell-cast piended design with a platform and is slated, featuring two segmental-headed dormers in the attic. The elevation facing Horsemarket has a two-bay design, with the ground floor shop window significantly enlarged. The building includes corniced architraves, although the cornices have been cut off at No 40. There is a cill-band at No 40, a mutulated cornice that has been replaced at No 40, and a blocking course. The original segmental-headed attic dormers and brick stacks are also present.
