Description
The Cross Keys Hotel, located in The Square, Kelso, dates back to around 1760 and was given an Italianate front in 1879. This four-storey building features seven bays, with a central coach entry that has a basket arch and a modern door to the right. The ground floor windows lack architraves, but the alterations from 1879 included the addition of corniced architraves at the first floor and lugged architraves at the second floor. The rusticated angle quoins, dating from 1760, were replicated at the third floor added in 1879. At the top, there is a dentil cornice at the wall head with a balustraded parapet above, featuring large ball and spike finials at the interval and terminal piers. Similar finials and a large gilt cross-keys sign adorn the central single bay attic pavilion, which provides access to the roof promenade.
