4 Castle Street, Edinburgh

4 Castle Street in Edinburgh is a building dating from around 1793, with later alterations, including a shopfront added in 1983. It features a surviving three-storey basement and attic, representing half of a former symmetrical classical block. This section is slightly set back from the corner building to the south and has a splayed link. The exterior is made of polished cream sandstone ashlar and is built out at the ground level over an area, showcasing a mid-19th century cornice and brattishing.

The three left bays of the upper floors are united as a single bow, and there is a fluted band course above the first floor, with large rosette medallions marking the piers. A triglyph frieze and cornice are present at the eaves, along with a bipartite piended dormer to the left and chamfered arrises. The windows are timber sash and case, with 15 panes on the first floor and 12 panes on the second. There is a mutual dressed stone stack to the south, and the roof is covered with grey slates.

Inside, the building has been radically altered, with the upper floors now accessed from adjacent buildings.
