118 George Street, Edinburgh

118 George Street in Edinburgh is a building dating from around 1785, with some later alterations. It features a three-storey and basement structure with a three-bay classical facade that was originally a house. The exterior is made of polished cream sandstone ashlar, which has been cleaned. The ground floor has channelled rustication, and there is a tripartite doorpiece that has been much restored and is now closed, flanked by fluted stylised Corinthian pilasters and a fluted frieze. Above, the first floor has a cill course with long and short rusticated quoins, and the windows on this floor are architraved and corniced. The building has a mutuled eaves cornice and a lead-covered blocking course.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 12 panes on the ground floor and 15 panes on the first floor. The building has ashlar coped skews, rebuilt stone stacks, and a roof covered with grey slates.

Inside, there is a fine geometric stair that has survived general rebuilding, which was part of the development of No 120 George Street, listed separately. The property also features modern cast-iron spearhead railings and a lamp standard.
