Description
1 The Square in Kelso is a mid 18th century building with 19th century alterations, featuring three storeys. The irregular three-bay front facing the square is rendered with painted ashlar margins. The ground floor has a mid-19th century shop front with pilasters, which has been altered and partly obscured by a later single-storey projecting porch on the left. The first floor windows on the right have been enlarged and modified to create bipartites, while there is a square window under the eaves on the second floor.
The elevation facing Abbey Row is also rendered with painted ashlar margins and originally had a symmetrical six-bay front with a steep pediment over the central two bays. A mid-19th century pilastered doorcase has been added, accessed by rail steps at the first floor in the right centre bay. The second floor windows, which were originally square, have been lengthened in the two right-hand bays. The building features rusticated angle quoins, a moulded cornice that stops below the pediment, straight skews, brick end stacks, and a slated roof.
