Description
The Bank of Scotland, located at 9 The Square in Kelso, is a classical building from the mid-19th century. The ground floor was altered by the architects Dick Peddie and Walker Todd between 1935 and 1937, with further modifications in 1942. The building features a three-storey, four-bay façade made of polished ashlar stone facing the Square. The entrance door, situated in the right-hand centre bay, is topped with a bracketed cornice and is set on a black granite plinth, with horizontal channelled rustication added during the 1935-37 renovations. To the left, there is an entrance to chambers above. The first floor includes a moulded cill-course, with windows framed by lugged architraves and cornices, and the window above the door is pedimented. The second floor windows also have lugged architraves. The building is finished with a dentil cornice and a blocking course, topped by a piended slated roof.
