Description
The Old Church on Church Street in Eyemouth was originally built in 1811 by Alexander Gilkie, with alterations to the steeple and west front made by 'Mr Elliot' in 1836, and further enlargement in 1902. The west front features a gabled design with a pair of tall round-headed windows on either side of the central tower. The tower consists of four stages; the lowest stage has a pedimented entrance door, while the second stage includes a blind niche with a scrolled pediment. Above this, at the third stage, there is a clock, and the uppermost stage has a square tower with chamfered angles, round-headed belfry windows with scrolled pediments, and an ogival stone cap topped with a weathervane. The exterior is finished in stugged ashlar with polished margins, while the sides of the church are rendered and feature round-headed windows. To the south, facing east, is the 1902 wing, which is gabled and has round-headed windows along with a small square projecting porch to the right. Inside, the gallery was removed in 1902.
