Description

Rafford Parish Church, designed by James Gillespie Graham in 1826 with alterations and additions by P. MacGregor Chalmers in 1907, is a Gothic-style building constructed from harled pointed rubble with tooled and polished ashlar dressings. The south gable is fronted by a three-stage tower featuring an entrance at the base, with each stage marked by a string course. The recessed entrance has a Perpendicular Gothic doorpiece flanked by ashlar dummy facetted lanterns topped with crocketted caps. Above the entrance is a hoodmoulded pointed-headed traceried window, and the upper stage of the tower has louvred windows on the north, south, and west faces. The tower is capped with an ashlar balustraded wallhead, which includes substantial corbelled and crocketted angle pinnacles.

The long west elevation has three large windows with Perpendicular tracery, each flanked by stepped buttresses that rise to the wallhead, ending in significant crocketted pinnacles. The east elevation features three similar windows from 1907, with buttressing only in the outer bays. A large hoodmoulded and similarly traceried window is located in the centre of the north gable. There is a small hexagonal vestry added in 1907 at the northeast. The church has clear quarry glazing from 1907, except for a stained glass window from around 1918 in the north. The apex of the north gable is topped with a finial, and the roof is slate.

Inside, the church has a lofty interior that was largely remodelled in 1907. A cusped panelled dado, made from the former gallery front, encircles the interior. The pulpit, holy table, and rear screen are all cusped and panelled, dating from 1907. There is a round-headed entrance into the church from the lobby, also from 1907, and the pews are plain stained pine, added in the same year.
