Description
Rongai House is a two-storey building with a raised basement, dating from 1817, with a rear wing added around 1840. It has a southwest-facing, three-bay symmetrical frontage. The exterior features harled walls with tooled and polished ashlar margins and dressings. The central door is accessed by a splayed flight of steps that oversails the raised basement and is flanked by a cast-iron handrail and a corniced, pilastered doorpiece, leading to a panelled door. There are two ground floor windows in the west gable, while the lower two-storey, two-bay rear wing dates from circa 1840. The main house has two-pane glazing, while the rear wing features 12-pane windows. The building has coped panelled end stacks and a slate roof.
At the rear of the house is a long, low steading, primarily single storey. This structure is built of harl pointed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. It includes a two-bay square-headed cartshed or gighouse with a loft above, all covered by slate roofs.
