Description

The lodge, designed by George Simpson in 1887-8, serves Cathay House and is a single-story building with crowstepped gabled bays on its south and east faces, framing a central drum tower porch. The construction is of bullfaced rubble with contrasting tooled and polished ashlar dressings. The porch features a recessed entrance with shaped and moulded detailing, a double-leaf panelled door, and a deep ashlar eaves band to the tower, topped with a corbelled cornice and a conical roof covered with fish scale slates. A triangular canted window projects from the centre of the south-facing gable; a bipartite window is positioned centrally on the east gable. Windows have two panes of glazing. The gables have finials, and the roof is slate with a decorative red tile ridge.

The entrance is flanked by circular bullfaced rubble gate piers, each adorned with facetted cornices decorated with ball ornamentation and facetted pyramidal caps. Low coped bullfaced quadrants connect these central piers to similar end piers, incorporating cast-iron railings. A pair of later cast-iron carriage gates complete the arrangement. The Elgin Courant, dated 13 August 1907, page 3, contains reference to the lodge.
