Description

Leanchoil Hospital, located on St Leonard's Road in Forres, is a hospital block that serves as the centerpiece of a complex made up of three main blocks, two of which are unlisted, along with a separately listed lodge. The designs for the original block, now known as the East and West Wings, were submitted in July 1889 by J Rhind of Inverness. After Rhind's death in August, his plans were sent to H Saxon Snell, a London architect known for his hospital designs, who highly approved of them and offered to complete the work.

The hospital opened on 24th April 1892, with the date inscribed as 1892. It was initially planned as a general Cottage Hospital with a separate block for infectious diseases. The building features a symmetrical layout with three parallel blocks connected by corridors and combines Tudor and Jacobean detailing. It is constructed of rubble with contrasting ashlar dressings and has original sash windows in the center block, decorative skews and stacks, and slate roofs throughout.

The two-storey center block has an entrance bay situated between a pair of closely spaced gabled bays, featuring mullioned and transomed windows, shaped gable-heads, and a square clock tower behind with a louvred ventilator, resembling a simplified version of the tower of Stirling Town House. The single-storey ward blocks were originally arranged with male patients to the left upon entry and female patients to the right. The angle pavilions are circular at the front and square at the rear, containing lavatories and axial ventilators. The front walls have been altered from their original two-window design, which featured canted center bays, to flat-roofed sections with large windows, likely around 1939 when a maternity wing was added to the southeast. The additions and alterations to the front use original materials, except for the glazing in the corridors and modern glazing in the ward blocks, which were updated around 1939.
