Description
This is a late 19th-century conservatory, part of Newbold House in Forres, designed by Peter Fulton and dated 1893. The house itself is an asymmetrical, gabled structure with baronial detailing, two storeys, a three-bay west-facing entrance front, and a south-facing garden elevation. It is built of bullfaced rubble with tooled and polished ashlar dressings.
The conservatory is a large, rectangular, aisled structure that adjoins the east gable of the main house. It has a projecting centre porch and features slender cast-iron cluster columns supporting the interior, with a raised centre aisle roof and decorative cast-iron angle braces. A doorway connects the conservatory to the house’s dining room.
The west-facing gable of the conservatory projects, and the interior of the house demonstrates spacious panelled rooms. The entrance hall and staircase features a wooden cantilivered staircase with a panelled dado, turned balusters, and newel posts. The drawing room has a high white-painted panelled dado and a wooden chimneypiece with reeded pilasters, a mantel shelf, an original brass chimney hood with Art Nouveau relief decoration, a cast-iron grate, and tiled slips and a front. The dining room has a high wooden panelled dado and a substantial dark wood chimneypiece including squat Ionic columns and an oval bevelled mirror.
Behind the house, a substantial rubble walled garden has a tooled cope. It includes a large greenhouse with decorative ridge brattishing, adjacent to a boiler house with a tall brick chimney.
