Description

Nairn Town and County Hospital, built between 1904 and 1906 and designed by William Mackintosh of Inverness, features a symmetrical Renaissance style that is decorative and formulaic. The hospital consists of three blocks connected by recessed porches, with a full-length spinal corridor inside and wards on either side. The central administrative block is two stories high and has three bays, with bipartite windows throughout and a shallow-advanced center topped with a curvilinear gable. The outer ward blocks have L-shaped fronts and large three-light windows in their front gables. The building is constructed from stugged and snecked grey ashlar with dressed details and sculptural ornamentation, such as window pediments. The ground level features plate-glass windows typical of hospitals, including two-pane sash and case windows with top hoppers, while the upper level has traditional sash and case windows. The roof has kneelered skews and ball-finialed gable heads, with end and rear wall-head chimney stacks, some of which have been reduced in height.

The rear of the building is plainer, except for the maternity wing, which opened in 1932 and was inaugurated by Lady Leven. This wing has a striking revivalist design with multi-paned windows on two levels and resembles a medieval great hall. Its main facade features a long wall with mullioned and transomed ground floor windows, incorporating hoppers at ground level, and pedimented dormers in the attic above. The left bay includes a large window that illuminates a communal space. The ward blocks, which also lead off a long corridor that connects to the main block, are located on the ground floor. The maternity wing has harled walls, dressed ashlar detailing, and chimney stacks, with a slate roof. An Out-Patient Department was added shortly after World War II.

The hospital is set in open landscaped grounds with specimen trees and features a low perimeter wall along the street, where the railings have been removed. The entrance includes panelled gatepiers, although the gates are missing.
