Description
Romany House is an Italianate villa dating from around 1900, situated on Morebattle Road in Town Yetholm, along with associated stables and later extensions to the north. The house is constructed of bull-faced sandstone with polished dressings to the main elevations, while squared and snecked whinstone rubble is used elsewhere, all with sandstone dressings. A base course, eaves band course, heavily bracketed eaves cornice, and shallow segmental-arched windows are prominent architectural features.
The south (principal) elevation is four bays, including an advanced bay to the right. The entrance is in the third bay, featuring a panelled door, a segmental-arched fanlight, a cornice, and a blocking course. There's a single window to the left return and above at the first floor. A pedimented bay to the outer right contains three windows to each floor, with an oculus in the pediment, a first-floor window to the left return, and windows to the right return at both ground and first floor levels. Single windows are located in the first and second bays.
The west (entrance) elevation, presenting three bays to the main house, incorporates a doorway set off to the left within an advanced and pedimented central bay, distinguished by consoles supporting a corniced canopy and a flanking window. A Venetian stairwindow is situated above, and a ground-floor window is present in the first bay, with two windows at the first floor. A window at ground floor is in the bay to the outer right. A service wing is recessed to the left, and a later addition projects from this wing, featuring a canted entrance at ground level and two windows to the west elevation at the first floor. An L-shaped stable court extends to the outer left, featuring two capped gatepiers and carriage arches on the west and north elevations. The stable’s west elevation has a window with an oculus in the gablehead.
The east elevation has three bays for the house, with a lean-to conservatory occupying the first and second bays at ground level. A window is at first floor in the second bay, and a single window in the third bay. A recessed service wing has two bays, with a tripartite window at ground in the first bay and single windows in the remaining bays. The rear of the stable court, on the right, exhibits irregular window placement.
The windows are plate glass sash and case designs. The roof is grey slate, piended in form, with box dormers to the west and south. Tall, coped wallhead stacks are present, along with original rainwater goods, including hoppers and decorative downpipe brackets.
The interior features include painted glass panels in the stairwindow, a timber balustrade and handrail, embossed wallpaper dado, timber chimneypieces, a decorative classical overmantel with encaustic tiled hall flooring, and a tripartite vestibule door with etched glass.
