George And Abbotsford Hotel, High Street, Melrose

The George and Abbotsford Hotel, located on High Street in Melrose, is an early 19th-century building that was significantly enlarged in the later 19th century. Originally, it was a six-bay, two-storey block, with the centre left bay projecting forward. This bay features a pilastered doorcase that contains a door and sidelights. The ground floor windows have moulded architraves and cornices, while the first-floor windows also have moulded architraves, with a tripartite window situated above the door. The second floor and mansarded attic were added in the later 19th century; the second-floor windows have corbelled cills and moulded architraves, with the advanced bay featuring bipartite windows. At the top, there is a bold corbelled cornice at the wallhead, with pilastered and pedimented dormers in the attic. To the right, there is a two-bay, three-storey and attic addition that includes the main hotel entrance, which is marked by a paired Tuscan columned porch with a balustrade above, continuing as a balcony over the right-hand canted bay that rises from the ground to the second floor. The entrance features bipartite windows above it, and there is a bold corbelled cornice at the wallhead, along with pedimented attic dormers. The building is constructed of painted coursed squared rubble with ashlar dressings.
