Description

Woodville is a house located on South Street in Gavinton, dating from the earlier 19th century with later alterations. It is a two-storey building with an attic and features a three-bay main section along with a single-storey, two-bay wing to the west. There are also sheds projecting from the west to the south. The main structure is built from squared and coursed sandstone with stugged ashlar dressings on the north elevation, while the west elevation is harled. The south elevation has heavy harl-pointing and harled sandstone with broad-droved ashlar dressings, and the east elevation is made of whinstone and sandstone rubble, with a projection to the south. The single-storey addition to the west is constructed from rubble with droved ashlar dressings. The two-storey group features raised quoins and an eaves course on the north elevation, while the south elevation and the north elevation of the single-storey wing have flush quoins.

On the north elevation facing South Street, the arrangement is symmetrical for the two-storey group. There is a stair window in the centre flanked by blinded windows on each floor of the side bays. A modern glazed door is located to the left of the single-storey wing, with a window to the right.

The south elevation has a central door at ground level with a window above it on the first floor, along with a window in each of the flanking bays. A modern platformed sunroom is situated in the centre, and there is a boarded door and window to the outer left of the east return.

The windows throughout Woodville are primarily 12- and 4-pane timber sash and case, except for a modern pivoted plate glass window on the north elevation of the single-storey wing. The roof is slate with brick stacks, and there is a scroll skewputt to the northwest of the single-storey wing. Additionally, there are two 19th-century rooflights on the south side of Woodville, as well as solar panels.

Inside, the principal room on the first floor features a painted timber chimneypiece with fluted pilasters and fine carving, along with a delicate cornice. The timber banister is notable, and the principal ground floor room has panelling up to the dado, likely serving as a dining room.
