Description

Norwood is a house located on Main Street in Gavinton, dating from the earlier to mid 19th century, with later additions and alterations. It is a 2-storey, 3-bay structure. The south elevation features stugged sandstone ashlar, with droved ashlar quoins around the openings, polished ashlar raised quoins, and chamfered margins on the windows. The north elevation is constructed of harl-pointed sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, while the west elevation is line-rendered. The building has rusticated quoins.

On the north elevation, the layout is irregular, with a window to the right of centre on the first floor, and a window at both the ground and first floor in the bay to the right. There is a bipartite window at the ground level of the bay to the left, with a window above it on the first floor. A modern line-rendered garage with a platform roof and timber porch is set back to the west in the re-entrant angle.

The south elevation is more regularly arranged, featuring a central door at ground level with a letterbox fanlight above, adorned with a Tudor hoodmould. There is a window above this door on the first floor, and additional windows in each of the flanking bays on both floors. A later lean-to conservatory spans the left and central bays at ground level, disrupting the hoodmould.

The house has a variety of windows, primarily uPVC. The roof is slate, with brick wallhead stacks on the west and east sides. There is a metal mesh snowboard at the eaves on the south side extending from the centre to the outer left.

The boundary wall and gateway to the southwest consists of a tall sandstone wall with moulded coping. There is a Tudor arched gateway near the house, featuring a hoodmould with a carved head at its apex and a modern boarded door. Another carved head is located to the left of the gate.
