Description

Leigh Annex at Crieff Hydro is a villa built in the later 19th century and extended in the 20th century. It is a 2-storey building with an attic and basement, featuring four bays and a distinctive bowed entrance bay. The roof has finialled jerkinhead dormer windows, and the structure is situated on sloping ground that falls sharply to the west. The exterior is constructed from bull-faced rubble with contrasting ashlar dressings and quoin strips, and there is a raised base course. The entrance includes a hoodmould above a floreate-carved lintel, a panelled timber door with a three-part fanlight, and flanking windows. The building showcases shoulder- and round-arched openings, stone mullions, and chamfered arrises.

On the east elevation, there is a broad bowed conical-roofed bay to the left of the center, which contains the main entrance. The first floor features a bipartite window beneath a carved round-headed panel with small flanking windows. Above this, there is a tripartite dormer window with a billeted cornice and a bowed roof. The ground floor has single windows in the flanking bays, and there is a further window on the first floor to the right that breaks the eaves into the dormer head, along with a shouldered wallhead stack on the left. To the outer right, there is a lower, slightly set-back later bay with round-headed windows at the ground level and in the mansard roof.

The west elevation has five bays with canted outer bays and a raised basement. The basement features square windows, while the ground floor has an irregular seven-light canted window at the center, flanked by tripartite windows with a carved semicircular panel over the center lights and single windows in the outer bays. The first floor has regular fenestration, with the center window featuring a carved panel, although it appears to have been altered with the removal of a mullion. The dormer heads break the eaves, and bays two and four have tripartite dormer windows.

The north elevation includes a mansard-roofed extension, while the south elevation has been altered and features a variety of elements, including a fire escape and a flat-roofed dormer. The windows are timber sash and case with 4-pane and plate glass glazing patterns. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks with cans. The eaves are deeply overhanging with exposed rafters, and the cast-iron downpipes include decorative rainwater hoppers and fixings.
