Description

Larchgrove is an Arts and Crafts villa dating from 1902, designed by Robert Matthew Mitchell. It is a two-storey building with an attic and cellar, retaining a good interior scheme. The exterior is whitewashed harl with base and eaves courses, mutuled cornices, and timber mullions.

The principal, north-west elevation features an advanced gable in the central bay, flanked by battered buttresses. The entrance has a pointed arch doorway with a truncated apex detail, containing a part-glazed timber door and flanking narrow lights. A tripartite window sits above the doorway, with a semicircular-headed centre light and a panelled apron. Flanking bays have windows set over moulded bands, with the left bay also featuring a ground floor window. A flat-roofed bay to the right has a tripartite window on each floor, topped with a mutuled cornice. The penultimate bay to the left also has a first-floor window and a set-back bay with a ground floor window.

The south-west elevation is asymmetrical, with a gabled bay featuring two narrow, semicircular-pedimented windows dated '1902'. A further narrow light is set within a chamfered outer angle, corbelled to a jettied first floor, where two bipartite windows are linked under a cornice, appearing as a six-light window. A flat-roofed bay to the left has a corniced rectangular window with bipartite returns, with a small horizontal window above.

The south-east elevation (the rear) has a French window to the right of centre at ground level, a single window to the right, and a horizontal window to the left. The first floor has three closely-aligned narrow lights in the gablehead and a bipartite window breaking the eaves into a flat-roofed dormer on the right.

The north-east elevation is asymmetrically-fenestrated with a variety of features including a low projecting gable to the right and a single-storey bay to the left.

The windows are timber casements with multi-pane and decorative leaded glazing, and some have a six- and eight-pane glazing pattern over plate glass in timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered in rosemary tiles. The chimneys are coped and harled with cans.

The interior retains a good Arts and Crafts decorative scheme, with decorative and plain moulded cornices and architraved panelled doors. A screen door with coloured leaded glass leads to a panelled stair hall, which contains a timber dog-leg staircase with tall finialled newels and dado rails. The drawing room has a shallow arch over a timber-panelled inglenook-effect fireplace, with a stylised tree detail on flanking coloured glass windows. Opposite, a similar archway connects outer doors with decoratively-astragalled upper panels.

The property is enclosed by moulded, ashlar-coped stepped rubble boundary walls and decorative ironwork gates.
