Description

St Oswald’s is a 2-storey and basement house with a single storey element, built in 1899 and with an addition dated 1903, likely designed by John Murray Robertson. The house is situated on a steeply sloping site to the southwest and is an L-shaped building with a mock half-timbered gabled design. The exterior is constructed of bull-faced ashlar stone with squared rubble and red sandstone ashlar dressings, incorporating a ground floor cill course and some tabbed margins.

The southwest (principal) elevation features 2-storey bays to the left and a taller single-storey bay to the right. A full-height polygonal-roofed canted bay is positioned to the left of centre, with a bipartite window at basement level and a 4-light window on each floor above. To the outer left is a rectangular bay with a wide-centre tripartite window at basement level, with further wide-centre tripartite windows to each floor above; that to the first floor breaks through the eaves into a gablehead. A bipartite window is situated to the right of centre, and a bay to the outer right contains a large canted 4-light window also breaking eaves into a gablehead.

The northeast (entrance) elevation incorporates a bay to the left of centre featuring a doorpiece with a semicircular pediment and a ball finial, with an inset panel on the tympanum carved with the initials ‘WDP’ and the date ‘1903’. A panelled timber door and semicircular fanlight are positioned below, with two widely spaced windows beyond. The elevation is completed by an asymmetrically-fenestrated, advanced and stepped 2-storey bay to the right.

The northwest elevation displays a variety of elements on the stepped design, including a slate-roofed rectangular bay containing a decoratively-astragalled 5-light window above a basement door, located to the outer right at ground level. The southeast elevation is a blank, single-storey gabled section.

The windows are timber sash and case windows with plate glass glazing. The roof is covered in grey slates, and the chimneys are constructed of coped and neck-banded red brick with some cans. Overhanging eaves are present with plain bargeboarding, complemented by decorative cast-iron finials.

The interior includes plain cornices, a timber dog-leg staircase, brass sash lifts, and some parquet floors. A panelled billiard room features a timber fire surround, a boarded timber roof, and a decoratively-astragalled cupola.

The property is enclosed by rubble boundary walls with semicircular coping, coped square-section ashlar gatepiers, and decorative cast-iron gates.
