Description

Roundelwood is a large, 3-storey and basement mansion built in 1885 by John Honeyman of Glasgow, with later extensions in the late 20th century. The house is constructed in the Scots Baronial style, incorporating early Renaissance and Jacobethan details. It is built of squared and snecked rock-faced masonry with white sandstone ashlar dressings, punctuated by dividing and eaves courses.

The east (principal) elevation is asymmetrical and stepped, featuring a balustraded dog-leg staircase leading to a central, curvilinear-gabled porch. This porch has a strapwork and Gibbsian doorcase, topped with a heraldic panel, and is accompanied by a transomed tripartite stair window. A conical-roofed round tower projects to the left, with a large transomed tripartite window on the ground floor, a corbel course supporting a moulded band with a carved heraldic beast, a smaller tripartite on the first floor, and widely spaced small windows above. A crowstepped gable to the left has a blank basement and a single window to each floor above, the second-floor window featuring a carved and dated pediment. The bays to the right of the centre are plainer, with a small window on each floor, while the outer right bay is lower in height.

The south (garden) elevation includes a monumental, crowstepped canted bay to the outer right with three windows to the basement and ground floors. The centre windows above have outer angles corbelled to square at the first floor, with further corbelled turrets at the second floor. Two asymmetrically-fenestrated recessed bays are to the left, the outer bay featuring a decorative ironwork balcony to the ground floor and a corbelled, transomed 4-light bowed window above, topped with a crowstepped gable.

The north and west elevations have been extended; the north extension creates a closed courtyard with a large, segmental-arched stair window on the north face of the south block.

Most windows are timber sash and case, with 4-pane and plate glass glazing, although some modern replacements exist. Coloured figurative glass is present in the transomed lights on the south elevation and the stair window. The roof is covered in grey slates. The building features coped ashlar stacks with polygonal cans, ashlar-coped skews with moulded skewputts, and cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers.

The interior displays a fine decorative Jacobean scheme, including decorative plasterwork, a timber-detailed ceiling in the tower, and carved fire surrounds. The entrance hall has a honeycomb-panelled ceiling and parquet floor, while the stair-hall has timber panelling, a timber-balustered dog-leg staircase, and coloured glass in the stair window.

The property is bounded by coped rubble walls with ball-finialled, square-section ashlar gatepiers.
