Description

Castellar is a villa located at 41 Drummond Terrace in Crieff, possibly designed by J Murray Robertson in 1893. This two-storey building features a basement and attic, and is constructed in a three-bay design with a piend roof. It is set on a steeply sloping site to the southwest. The exterior is made of stugged red sandstone with ashlar dressings, and the sides and rear are finished in squared and snecked rubble. The building includes cill and lintel band courses, a pargetted surface, and a cavetto eaves cornice. Stone mullions and chamfered reveals are also present.

The southwest elevation, which is the principal facade, is symmetrical. It has a broad central bay with tripartite windows on each floor, leading to a tripartite dormer window with a round-headed center. The outer bays are full-height and canted, with canted windows on each floor, including a basement window to the right. The right bay has an ogee roof, while the left bay features a flat roof with a three-part rooflight above.

On the northwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, there is a broad slate-roofed piended porch to the left of center, featuring an 8-light window, a door, and a window on each return, along with two windows above. To the ground right, there is a bipartite window.

The southeast elevation includes a full basement with a central door and windows in the flanking bays. The ground floor has three grouped windows (1-2), and there are three smaller windows on the first floor. An outer right bay is slightly lower and canted, with windows on both the ground and first floors.

The northeast elevation has been altered and features a variety of elements, including three piended bays and a further projecting piend-roofed bay to the left, along with a six-light stair window in the center.

The villa has a glazing pattern of 6- and 9-pane over plate glass in timber sash and case windows, while the porch has fixed timber windows with a 4-pane over plate glass design. There is also a multi-pane leaded stair window. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there are coped and neck-banded red brick stacks with cans.

Inside, the villa features plain cornices, a black and gold marble fireplace with a sideboard alcove in the dining room, and a grey fireplace with red marble in the drawing room. The staircase is dog-legged with timber balusters and ball-finialled newels. The hall floor is tiled with mosaic, and there is a part-glazed screen door.

The property is enclosed by castellated rubble boundary walls, which are topped with pyramidally-coped and castellated square-section ashlar gatepiers, complemented by decorative ironwork gates.
