Description
Coille Brochain is a single-storey and attic cottage, possibly dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, designed in the picturesque cottage orné style. It features three bays with flanking single-storey wings that have piended roofs. Originally part of the Bonskeid Estate, the cottage has a thatched roof, which was later altered to a slate roof, and the original rounded eyelid dormerheads were converted to timber gablets over round-headed windows. The exterior is constructed from roughly squared and coursed granite and sandstone rubble, with roughly squared granite quoins and margins.
The symmetrical entrance elevation faces southeast and includes a part-glazed timber door at the centre, flanked by square-headed windows. Above, there are three round-headed windows that break the eaves into timber-pedimented dormerheads. The lower flanking wings feature a later square-headed window on the right and round-headed windows on the northeast and southwest returns.
The windows are primarily timber sash and case with an 8-pane horizontal glazing pattern, most having horns. The round-headed windows display decorative simple Y-traceried astragals. The roof is covered with grey Scottish slates, except for the slated lower part of the rear roof. The gablehead stacks are made of coped ashlar with polygonal cans, and the bargeboarding is plain.
Inside, the cottage has been modernised but retains some features such as moulded cornices, cast iron horseshoe fireplaces with plain granite and timber surrounds, and four-panelled timber doors.
