Description

31 and 33 Wellmeadow in Blairgowrie is a three-storey and attic, five-bay Renaissance-style tenement built before 1860. It features a shop and public house on the ground floor and forms part of a regular terrace to the north. The building has narrow ashlar bands, rusticated quoins, and ashlar dressings. Architectural details include a frieze and cornice on the ground floor, a cill course on the second floor, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course. The entrance features a keystoned, round-headed door, with architraved openings on the ground and first floors, and tabbed margins on the second floor.

On the northeast elevation, the central bay at ground level has a consoled cornice above a keystoned moulded doorpiece, which is adorned with a decorative cast-iron gate leading to the pend entrance. There are display windows in each flanking bay, with fielded pilasters that lead to a two-leaf panelled timber door and an outer console to the cornice. The upper floors have regular fenestration, with slightly reduced openings on the second floor, and two pedimented dormer windows on the outer bays, along with a small rooflight in the center.

The windows have a four-pane glazing pattern in timber sash and case style, with modern glazing on the second floor, and a six-pane glazing pattern in the fixed timber display windows. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks with rusticated quoins and polygonal cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews.

Inside No. 33, there are moulded cornices. The pend has a stone flag floor that leads to a winding, cantilevered stone staircase with decorative cast-iron balusters and a timber handrail. The first and second floors were not seen in 2002.
