Description

The Bank of Scotland, located at 29-30 Wellmeadow in Blairgowrie, was likely designed by A Heiton Senior & Son of Perth in 1851. This three-storey and attic building features a six-bay Renaissance small tenement style and has been converted from a bank to a shop and public house on the ground floor, forming part of a regular terrace. The exterior is finished in rusticated and polished ashlar with rusticated quoins. Architectural details include a ground floor cornice, a cill course on the second floor, an eaves cornice, and a deep blocking course. The ground floor has round-headed, concave-moulded openings arranged in an arcade, while the first floor features corniced and architraved openings with voussoirs.

On the northeast (principal) elevation, there is a bay to the left of centre that contains a panelled timber door with a semicircular fanlight and a brass letterbox marked 'BANK HOUSE'. This bay is flanked by two windows on the left and another window to the outer right. The bay to the right of centre includes a window that has been converted from a door, and the penultimate bay to the right has a door that has been converted from a window. The upper floors display regular fenestration, with slate-hung, pedimented dormer windows above the second and fifth bays.

The southwest (rear) elevation presents a variety of elements, symmetrically fenestrated above the ground, including a rectangular stair tower with a tall round-headed window. The windows feature 4- and 12-pane glazing patterns, with 2-pane upper sashes over plate glass lower sections on the ground northeast. These are all timber sash and case windows, although there are some out-of-character PVCu windows on the second floor northeast and modern windows at the rear. The roof is covered in grey slates, with coped ashlar stacks featuring rusticated quoins and polygonal cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews. There are modern rooflights on the rear.

Inside, the former banking hall on the ground floor to the north has decorative plasterwork that is obscured by a lowered ceiling. The public house on the ground floor to the south includes some coloured glass, a timber fire surround, and a cast-iron grate. The upper floors were not seen in 2002.
