Description
This is a late 19th-century (1875) schoolhouse and school building, designed by Duncan D. Stewart, located in Invergowrie. The building comprises a two-story, irregular L-shaped schoolhouse and a single-story, similarly irregular L-shaped school, connected by a single-story service wing. The construction is of stugged and snecked rubble stone with ashlar dressings; the quoins are mostly redressed with stugged concrete. The roofs are slate-covered. The windows are predominantly droved and stop-chamfered, with transoms and mullions. Some window jambs are partly rendered with concrete, and the house windows feature plate glass glazing while the school windows have horizontally astragalled panes. The schoolhouse has a chamfered wallhead course with corbel detail on the south and west elevations, moulded bargeboards, exposed trusses in the house, corniced ridge stacks, and triangular roof vents.
The schoolhouse east elevation features a lean-to entrance porch with a gabled window set in the re-entrant angle, a door with a fanlight on the left return, and a stair window with a gabled dormerhead to the left. The north elevation includes a single window to the left, a heraldic date panel above, and a projecting gable with a tripartite window, angled gabletts, and a decorative cast-iron parapet. A recessed service block is positioned to the right, with a dormerheaded bipartite window. The west elevation displays a further advanced section of the service block with a window, a lean-to entrance porch, a four-pane window, a dormerheaded window, and a later dormer window.
The school’s east elevation includes a door to an entrance porch, a swept roof, three bipartite windows, and a stepped four-light window to a projecting gable. The south elevation features a gable with a stepped four-light window, a bipartite window, and three- and four-light windows. The west elevation has a door to an entrance porch at the centre, a projecting gable with a tripartite window, a louvred aperture to the roofspace, and two bipartites. A brick wallhead stack is also present.
The interior of the house was not inspected, while the school’s interior is very plain with only one chimneypiece remaining. The site is enclosed by low rubble boundary walls with rounded coping to the north and east, with formerly cast-iron railings. A high rubble boundary wall with rounded coping is present to the west, and a lower wall divides the house garden from the playground.
