Description

[Duncan D] Stewart, dated 1875. 2-storey, irregular L-plan, gabled school house with single storey service wing, adjoined to single storey, similarly irregular L-plan and gabled school. Stugged and snecked rubble, ashlar dressings, quoins mostly redressed with stugged concrete, slate roof. Single and grouped windows, mainly droved and stop-chamfered jambs, transoms and mullions, some partly rendered with concrete, mostly sash and case frames, plate glass glazing to house, horizontally astragalled panes to school; chamfered wallhead course with corbel detail to S and W elevations of school; moulded bargeboards, exposed trusses to house, corniced ridge stacks; triangular roof vents to school.

HOUSE: E ELEVATION: lean-to entrance porch with gabled window set in re-entrant angle formed with advanced bay to right, door with fanlight to left return; stair window to left with gabled dormerhead; gable to right, tripartite window to ground floor, bipartite to 1st.

N ELEVATION: single window to left, heraldic date panel above; gable advanced to right, projecting tripartite window gabletted at angles with decorative cast-iron parapet, bipartite to 1st floor; service block recessed to right with dormerheaded bipartite window.

W ELEVATION: service block advanced to left with window, lean-to entrance porch in right re-entrant angle, 4-pane window to main house at right, dormerheaded window above, later dormer window intercepting base of 2-storey gable to left.

SCHOOL: E ELEVATION: door to entrance porch in left re-entrant angle, swept roof; 3 bipartite windows to right; gable advanced to left, stepped 4-light window.

S ELEVATION: gable at off-centre right, stepped 4-light window; bipartite window to right; 3- and 4-light windows to left.

W ELEVATION: door to entrance porch at centre re-entrant; gable advanced to right, tripartite window, louvred aperture to roofspace, bipartite to left return; 2 bipartites to left, brick wallhead stack.

INTERIOR: interior of house not seen; interior of school very plain,

1 chimneypiece remaining.

BOUNDARY WALLS: low rubble boundary wall with rounded coping to N and E, cast-iron railings (removed from house boundary wall); high rubble boundary wall with rounded coping to W, similar lower wall dividing house garden from playground at W.
