Description
The Old Rectory is a late 19th-century building, originally a rectory, situated on Main Street in Invergowrie. It is a two-storey and attic structure with single-storey and single-storey and attic service bays arranged in an irregular plan. The exterior is constructed of bull-faced snecked rubble with a grey slate roof. A base course and narrow polished angles are visible, along with single, bi- and tripartite windows featuring chamfered reveals and mullions; mostly plate glass glazing is present, although some original multi-pane sashes remain in the upper sections. The roof has a platform design with gables, projecting eaves, decorative bargeboards and consoles, and ridge stacks with parapets to the east and west gables. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also a feature.
The north elevation has an advanced entrance gable, centered to the left, with a roll-moulded Gothic archway leading to a heavy door with diagonally boarded panels and decorative hinges. A lancet window is positioned to the left return. The first floor is corbelled out, with a bipartite window above and a blank panel to the gablehead, with a stack rising from the roof to the left. To the left there is a blank ground floor bay and a single window on the first floor; to the right, a service opening has been enlarged on the ground floor, with a transomed and mullioned stair window above and a further transomed window to the right. A recessed service bay to the far right features a bipartite window and a gabled dormer. A further L-plan service bay extends to the outer right, containing two windows.
The east elevation shows four windows on the ground floor, three on the first floor, and a wallhead gable at the center. A modern, out-of-character box dormer is located to the left.
The south elevation has the main house to the right, with a gable advanced to the right, containing a bipartite window on both the ground and first floors. A window on the ground floor right return is present, along with a door and a window on the first floor left return. A tripartite window is located on the ground and first floors to the left, with a half-piended dormerhead breaking through the eaves. A window to the left return and a bipartite gabled dormer are also visible, along with two modern rooflights. A single-storey and attic service bay is situated to the left; a round-headed archway leads to a two-leaf boarded door to the left, with two windows to the right and a gabled dormer with a large, out-of-character window. A recessed single-storey service bay is located at the far left and is mostly masked by a modern addition.
The west elevation displays an impressive arrangement of piended roofs, gables, and stacks rising from the service bays and the main house.
The interior has been altered, but retains an encaustic tile floor in the entrance hall.
A rubble boundary wall is located to the west.
