Description

The Dome Cafe, located at 14-20 Leslie Street in Blairgowrie, is a mid-19th century building that underwent dome and interior alterations by W J Brewster Grant & Henderson in 1925. It is a two-storey structure with a cellar and attic, featuring a three-bay restaurant with flatted dwellings above, and a rear entrance to Wellmeadow. The exterior is constructed of squared rubble with ashlar margins, and includes a ground floor frieze and eaves course.

On the northwest elevation, there is a traditional centre door shop in the central and right bays, which includes a deep-set two-leaf part-glazed timber door flanked by pilasters and an ironwork grille, along with fixed display windows. To the immediate left, there are steps leading up to a panelled timber door with a margined fanlight, and an additional shop to the outer left with a grille over a part-glazed door to the right and a fixed window to the left. The first floor features three regularly-disposed windows, with canted dormer windows over the outer bays flanking a piended dormer at the centre.

The building has some modern glazing that is out of character, including plate glass in the casement window at the centre dormer. The roof is covered with grey slates and has shared coped ashlar stacks.

Inside, the cafe boasts a good decorative scheme that includes a 1920s interior with a horseshoe counter and shelves, carved fixed bench seats, painted panelled walls with inset mirrors and decorative panels, and an embossed frieze. A large domed seating area features a flattened ribbed dome supported by heavy Tuscan columns, with a clerestorey over the central area and a segmental-arched two-leaf door with decoratively-astragalled fanlights.
