Description
St Mungo's Chapel and Graveyard, dating from around 1518 to 1525, is a small, low rectangular building with crowstepped gables, measuring 25 feet by 18 feet. It features two original chamfered square-headed windows on the south wall, one door and one window on the north wall, and a segment-headed door on the west side with a simple chamfer, which may be slightly later. A two-light window was added to the east wall during the restoration by Reginald Fairlie in 1925-1926. The base of a cross on the east gable dates back to the 14th century, indicating a previous chapel on the site.
The chapel is approached through a low-walled forecourt that includes large, richly detailed gatepiers from 1749, featuring fluted Ionic pilasters, urn finials, and supporting scrolls, which were relocated from the old approach to the house. Inside, the chapel has a simple layout with an original roof that has been partly repaired, resembling that of Tullibardine Chapel. There is a memorial slab to Malcolm Fleming from 1657, while other memorials inside are modern. The graveyard contains a rusticated obelisk for the wife of George Haldane, who died in 1770, as well as gravestones from 1686, 1697, and 1701, along with a modern memorial for Viscount Haldane of Cloan.
